Putting Yourself First Is the Way to Be Your Best in Your Business and Life

How often do you hear the importance of having a good life balance? Life blending is another term more recently used, which describes the same thing in a different way.

Whatever term you are using, it includes making time for you and all the things that are important to you. Now what this doesn’t mean is spending equal periods of time in each aspect of your life, unless that is what you want, because we all value different things.

Life balance is allowing time for everything that is important to you and that can be different amounts of energy and time put into different aspects of your life, depending on what you see as important for you.

Often what is forgotten here is to put some time and energy into you, giving yourself time for rest, play, laughter and self-nurturing. When you forget to do this over a long period of time, it can lead to your energy levels dropping and losing motivation. Forgetting yourself repeatedly over a prolonged period of time can even cause you to suffer health problems in the long term.

Recently my dear dad was flown to Townsville for open-heart surgery and of course, because my family feature very strongly in my values, I drove down to spend time with him and support him. Luckily my work is very mobile, which enabled me to do this.

The Royal Flying Doctors provide a wonderful service and because they are so busy, patients are often flown back with only 30 minutes notice, and this was the case when my dad was flown back to Cairns a few days later.

Now I could have jumped in the car immediately and driven straight back to be with him, which is something I would have done in the past. But, because I was already so tired, I knew I would have far more to give to him, if I first looked after myself. So instead, I stayed on an extra day to give myself some time to recharge before I attempted the long drive home. I put myself first, because I know when I do, I have far more to give afterwards.

In my last two articles I talked about the importance of learning to say “No” and the importance of saying, “Yes” to live a happier and healthier life. If you do both, you will find that you will have more time available to give back to yourself and recharge your own batteries. When you regularly rest and recharge, you will have more energy and more motivation and this will help you give more effectively and productively in all aspects of your life, including your business.

Identify what energises you

Different things energise different people. Some people energise more around others and some people energise more when they are alone. I personally energise alone when I read a book under a tree at my favourite beach and when I exercise and meditate each day. So, identify which activities boost your energy.

Create Your Power List

Make a power list of things that energise you or make you happy and this can be anything from having a warm bath or exercising for an hour, meditating for 15 minutes, to stand up paddle boarding or riding a motorbike. Now this is different for everyone, so make a list that lights you up, not a list of things that someone else likes to do.

Be your most valued client

Pick out one thing from your power list that takes a smaller chunk of time to do each day and one thing that takes a larger chunk of time to do each week. These activities may only take 15 minutes daily or they may take a full day weekly. Whatever you choose, block them into your daily and weekly planner as you would a meeting with a valued client and make a commitment to do it. Create a daily and weekly routine that includes you.

You might tell yourself you don’t have enough time to do this, because you have so much to do already. When you choose to make time to put yourself first even for 15 minutes daily, you will find that you always have enough time because you will have more energy and that means you will be more productive and achieve even more in your business.
