How to Find Better Flow in Both Your Work and Personal Life

Only 1 in 5 business owners works less than the standard 40-hour work week. The majority, in fact, are working 40+ hours per week and a significant number of entrepreneurs are stretching 60+ hours per week according to the survey conducted by The Alternative Board. The study also confirms that more than half expects no change in the near future and one-third said they anticipate an increase in hours they work.

So many of us, including myself, get stuck in the daily cycle of routine work. We often have very limited time to spare and even then we seem to fill it with never ending emails and phone calls, webinars and content or product creations. Work can quickly consume us and everything else in our life. It is a dangerous choice; it can impact our health, relationships and happiness.

I have found that working on business alone wasn’t solving all of my problems. I concluded that a foundational aspect to my solution wasn’t just to understand how to grow and improve my business but also how to be more present in my personal life.

Having had that realisation and believing in its importance, I have decided to change the flow of my working life. Sometimes the smallest changes we make can have the biggest impact on us, those around us and how we feel.

HERE ARE MY TIPS TO HELP YOU FIND BETTER BALANCE BETWEEN WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE:

-Unplug: switch off your devices, turn off your notification, establish rules around when you will stop using your laptop/mobile each day, create device-free days or weekends.

-Be social: have a face to face conversations with people, catch up with a friend you haven’t seen in a while, organise group dinner with friends, go to an event and meet new people.

-Mindfulness: be in the moment while performing the smallest everyday activities such as making a cup of tea or coffee, watching the clouds pass in the sky as a small dose of relaxation. Be still, sit down in your intimate surrounding, spend time in solitude. Focus on your breathing or just admire the beauty around you.

-Have a rest: take a nap if you are feeling tired and can’t concentrate. A 20-minute nap is sometimes all you need to recharge and refresh. Go to bed half hour early and get up one hour earlier.

-Reconnect with your partner: plan a date or date night with your partner and do it on regular bases. Surprise your partner with their favourite dinner, write them a love note. After you put your kids to bed, acknowledge the day you had with them. Allow yourself to enter into your personal space. Change the mood and reconnect with your partner. Have a conversation, think about something you experienced together in the past, reflect on the moments that made you fall in love with them. Laugh together.

There is so much more you can do to bring better flow into your work and personal life.

Life shouldn’t be just about work. It should be about many avenues that lead to your ultimate destination, called happiness. Find what makes you happy and you will be closer to finding it or at least moving in the right direction.
