Build Your Legacy Through Your Intellectual Property Assets

Build Your Legacy Through Your Intellectual Property Assets

How do you want to be remembered after you die?

We only have a short time on this planet, and one way that we can make an impact in the lives of others is through our businesses. If I say to you, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, we all know that’s Stephen Covey’s work. That’s the power of intellectual property assets like Covey’s 7 habits. He is no longer with us, but his intellectual property endures and continues to change lives and inspire.

So, one way you can create your legacy is through developing your own intellectual property assets.

So, what do you want to be known for?

In his 2008 TED Talk, Gary Vaynerchuk said, “There are way too many people in this room right now who are doing stuff they hate. Please stop doing that! There is no reason in 2008 to do shit you hate!”

Gary V is not everyone’s favourite entrepreneur, and even though this quote is from 10 years ago, I think the sentiment is still true. When you’re in your Zone of Genius, and you’re super passionate about it, there is a world of possibility for you to be doing something that you love.

Life is good when you can put your hand on your heart and know you’re making a difference.

That you’re leaving a positive footprint in the world, not only through your work but in your everyday life lived authentically and passionately. So, before you can build your intellectual property assets, it’s really important that you get super clear on your purpose.

What are you passionate about? What could you spend all day long doing with a smile on your face? What ideas, activities, challenges do you get out of bed for, and would happily keep you up all night? If you didn’t need money, what would you spend your days doing? I mean after you get bored of sipping cocktails on the beach.

What do you decide to do with your time when that gets boring and your drive to add value and make a difference kicks in?

Intellectual property assets don’t have to be rocket science.

We can sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that we need to create something complex to stand out and create our legacy. But it’s actually better when we can keep it simple. It all starts with one individual believing in themselves and getting absolute clarity as to how they are going to take that to their client demographic.

So, never fear, you have within you, the brilliance, the knowledge, and the expertise to create your own unique intellectual property that develops its own following.

What are you waiting for? You can start now and evolve it.

No one ever gets it right the first time. Give yourself the time and space to evolve and make your intellectual property into something truly memorable that will live on beyond you. No-one nails it the first time.

This is your opportunity to create a legacy. A body of work that outlives you and continues to serve beyond your years on this earth.

So take that opportunity and start today. What have you got to lose?

Very well said, Renee. The next step, of course, is to make sure you protect your IP. Unlike my husband’s grandad, who was a bit naive, and his inventions ended stolen and made someone else a multi-millionaire, while dear old grandad became an alcoholic (because his family considered him to be a failure). Tragically, he died a pauper on a park bench. Had he been a little IP-savvy, he could have ended up being the millionaire

Wowsers! Grandad’s story is a great reminder that we need to protect our IP. Well said Cathryn.
