Why You Need to Find Yourself a Business Bestie

My phone dinged, and I could almost hear her voice in my head as I read the message.

It was one of my business besties, and she was replying to an email I’d sent telling her about some outrageous demands being made by a new client.

“OH, MY G…,WOW. Just wow!”

The sentence in the preview window shouted up at me from my iPhone screen. Yep, I had my confirmation, just as I had suspected my client was being totally unreasonable. I was right; they were wrong, the end.

Feeling vindicated, I smiled and formulating a reply in my head; I opened the full email.

“But you know…”

Apparently, she had more to say, than the preview window had allowed me to see.

“You really could have handled things better yourself.”

On it continued for another few paragraphs, outlining all the places I’d gone wrong. What I should have done differently and what I needed to do to start repairing the now fractured relationship between my client and me.

Loyalty Is One Thing, But Not Everybody ‘Gets It’.

I sat back hard in my chair, the smile wiped from my face. I tried my best to be annoyed at her for not being completely on my side, but at the same time I couldn’t help but agree with her. Like it or not, she knew what she was talking about, and I had some work ahead of me.

That’s one of the reasons why I needed her in my life. She ‘got it’ and got me. Being a mum in business herself, she understood the highs and lows that came along with the juggles of this life. Why we both made sure that no matter how crazy things got in our lives, we’d always make time to check in. Because when you’re in business, you need people around you who understand your life, and who from time to time won’t mind dishing out some harsh realities.

You Can’t Do It Alone.

My phone rang rudely interrupting my wallowing, but I felt a rush of gratitude when I recognised the number on the screen. I’d taken an unusual amount of time to reply to her email, so my business bestie had picked up the phone to make sure I was ok.

This time I was, but there had been other times when I hadn’t been. Other times I’d really needed that call. Times I’d needed to talk to someone who completely understood the uniqueness of my problems. An understanding hand holding mine, talking me down from the edge when my brain was telling me to give up.

How Do You Find a Business Bestie?

So you know you need one, but how do you get one? Well, just like making any friends, you can’t find one if you’re sitting in your office not talking to anyone. You need to make an effort.

You can start small by jumping online and joining some Facebook business groups. Getting the Meetup app and looking for events happening in your local community. Or if you want to go bigger, join a regular networking group like BNI or Coffee Time.

Then, once you find yourself in a roomful of people, open up and let them see who you are and what you’re about. Make sure you stay available and genuinely interested in other people, and if you do this, the right people will find you.

Just like it takes a village to raise a child, it can take a village to run a business.

You really can’t do it alone. And this is why I think that having a business bestie is an essential component of a being a successful business owner.
