My ‘Online Nine to Nine’ Rule for Computer Addicted Parents

I think every child of Small Business parents can relate to them being stuck on their computers all night doing work. Kids can get the impression that even though what that parent is doing is important, so is the family movie night or going out somewhere together – things kids miss out on when parents are too busy working.

My dad used to be on his computer doing work till 1:00 AM and this made him stressed. When parents are distracted, busy or just not around enough (even when they are in the same room) it can feel like they don’t care. Kids pick up these emotions easier than you think.

If parents don’t make it a priority to spend quality time together, kids can feel disappointed, not worthy of their parents time or even unloved.

I got to a stage with my parents when they were just always busy, and I was asking myself ‘Am I not important enough? Do they still love me? Did I do something wrong?’

I knew something had to change. I am very determined and luckily for my parents and our family, I found a solution. They didn’t like it at first (especially Dad) however after lots of discussions we set a new family rule. It’s called the ‘Online Nine to Nine’ rule and means they can be online from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM ONLY. With strictly no time outside of those hours.

There are many benefits to this rule both mental and physical. Now that we have set this rule both my parents are more efficient with their work knowing that they have a strict deadline.  We see each other way more which we all love, and we get to do more fun things together.

It is so important to let your kids know that they are the most important thing, not to mention that too much screen time is not good for you anyway! I’m sure your kids will appreciate ‘Online Nine – Nine’ it just as much as I do. It’s a win-win.

WOW Isobel. What an incredible young woman you are and thank you for the reminder that my kids need their Mum to just “be” sometimes. I do get carried away on my computer and don’t spend enough quality time with them. I will make sure this changes, so your article has not only changed me, but will change my children too. THANK YOU. xx

Thanks Isobel for your perspective. As a dad who finds it easy to get distracted by the computer and the phone, I’m now going to be more aware of when and where I’m using technology. I’ll also try to be more present for my kids.
    Keep writing. Your opinions matter.

    Cheers Geoff
