Are You Happy Doing What You Do?

Are You Happy Doing What You Do?

Once upon a time, there was a 20 something year old that was a fitness professional/personal trainer, way before personal training was known as personal training.

She lived and breathed fitness and health and worked with a network of medical professionals assisting people of all ages to achieve their health and fitness goals. Fast forward 15 years and a downturn in the economy along with spiralling interest rates and this person made a career move. Back to study and stepping into the world of human resources.

Why am I telling you this?

Firstly, let me start with a question, “When you wake-up each morning are you excited about what your day brings? Does it light you up?”

Over the last few months, I’ve been genuinely considering how I feel and finally I’m ready to confess publicly, “I do not enjoy my work. It does not give me the sense of satisfaction I used to feel.” To be honest, most things I’ve been doing just feel too hard. My passion is drained, and people close to me have also recognised this.

When was the last time you took the time to re-assess your work life?

Are you happy and doing what comes naturally to you, doing what you love? Perhaps yes or just maybe it’s time to re-evaluate ‘you’. So many questions have been rushing through my mind to the extent that I was starting to feel overwhelmed.

Tasks were taking much longer than they should. I took time out to reflect and speak with those close to me. I engaged a professional coach who helped me gain clarity. I have been working in my current industry because I felt I had to, that is, what I thought was expected of me. Because I had moved into a new career 18 years ago, I assumed that’s where I had to stay.

I’ve built a successful business, copious resources and great clients, been through the many ups and downs of business, how could I walk away from this?

Now older and wiser and importantly braver I’m closing the professional circle. I am moving back into what I absolutely love and what lights me up. Back into the fitness industry that I left all those years ago. There’s hard work ahead of me, including lots of study but it’s my choice.

Ask yourself, “Are you happy doing what you do in your business?”

If your answer is no, then it’s time to explore why. I’m not suggesting rush in and make major changes; you need to take your time. There are many reasons why you may not be enjoying your business at the moment.

Reasons you may not be loving your business currently?

  • You haven’t had a good holiday with plenty of downtime to relax and refresh?
  • You’re wearing multiple hats resulting in being time poor?
  • Maybe your systems and processes need an overhaul?
  • Has there been a shift in your market that you need to address?
  • Are you surrounded by good people that have a positive outlook?
  • Are you wrongly comparing yourself to others?

So, take your time, speak with non-judgemental people, consider employing a coach and then make your own choice, it is your time, no one else’s. Makes this all about ‘you’.

Got a story to share on changes you’ve made in your professional life? I’d love to hear them. Write your brief in the notes below.
